The Vikings went far and wide in their mighty longboats. From the late 8th century, Vikings started raiding the British Isles. They were largely independent rulers of the region, even though they at various times swore nominal fealty to the kings of Norway, Ireland and Scotland. At the height of their power, the Lords of the Isles was among the mightiest and richest lordships in the British Isles.
