One of the most famous Icelandic sagas, is Brenner-Njàl`'s saga (or the story of the burnt Njàl.)

It is a classic tale of vengeance and feuds. It tells of a brutal society where small slights to a person's honour could lead to chains of violence that lasted for years. Two of the principal characters are Gunnar, a worrier of great renown, and Njàl, a famous lawyer. Njàl and Gunnar are good friends. Gunnar married Hallgerd, even though Njàl and others warned him against her evil character. Hallgerd took offence at something Njàl`'s wife, Bergtora, did. To get back at her, Hallgerd sends her thrall (slave) to kill one of Bergtora's thralls. Bergtora does the same in return. And from here, the chain of killing moves on until Gunnar is killed while defending his home, and ends with the burning of Njàl`'s farm, with him, his men and his wife still inside. The women and children are allowed to escape, as there was no honour in killing them, but Bergtora refused to leave.

"What, lads! are ye lighting a fire, or are ye taking to cooking?"

"So it shall be," answered Grani Gunnar's son; "and thou shalt not need to be better done."
